Best Time to Ride Avatar Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom
Avatar Flight of Passage is the headline ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and it usually has one of the longest standby lines in the park. It sits in Pandora – The World of Avatar, the land that opened in 2017, and it's the one attraction at Animal Kingdom that isn't part of Lightning Lane Multi Pass. That makes timing the single biggest thing you control.
The best time to ride Flight of Passage without paying extra is at the very start of the day, during Early Theme Park Entry or right at rope drop. The last hour before the park closes is the next best option. Late morning through the afternoon is usually when the posted wait is at its highest. If you'd rather not plan around the clock, Lightning Lane Single Pass lets you buy a return time instead, but it costs extra and can sell out.

Why Flight of Passage Has Such Long Waits
Flight of Passage is a 3D flight ride where you sit astride a mountain banshee and soar over Pandora's landscapes. It's one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World, and Animal Kingdom has fewer big rides than the other Disney parks, so a huge share of guests want to ride it on the same day.
A few things keep the line long:
- No single rider line. Standby is the only free way to ride.
- No Multi Pass. Lightning Lane Multi Pass doesn't cover it, so guests with Multi Pass still need to use standby or buy a separate Single Pass.
- Pre-shows. Before you board, you pass through pre-show rooms, so the time from joining the queue to leaving the ride is longer than the ride itself.
The posted wait changes all day with crowds and any ride downtime. Waits vary a lot by date, so treat any plan as a guide rather than a promise.
Option 1: Early Theme Park Entry
If you're staying at a Disney Resort hotel or another eligible hotel, Early Theme Park Entry lets you into Animal Kingdom 30 minutes before the park opens to everyone else, and Flight of Passage is one of the rides Disney lists for Early Entry. On 20 October 2026, for example, Disney's attraction page showed Early Entry from 7:30 AM and regular hours from 8:00 AM.
- Check the Early Theme Park Entry page and the Flight of Passage page for your dates.
- Arrive at the entrance before Early Entry starts, not when it starts.
- Walk straight to Pandora by crossing the bridge from Discovery Island, and don't stop for photos on the way.
Option 2: Rope Drop Without Early Entry
If you aren't staying somewhere with Early Entry, you can still do well by being at the entrance before official opening. The catch is that Early Entry guests will already be in line, so the queue won't be empty. Many guests head here first, so decide in advance whether Flight of Passage is your first ride or whether you'd rather start elsewhere and come back later.
A common choice is to ride Flight of Passage first, then walk next door to Na'vi River Journey. Na'vi River Journey is part of Lightning Lane Multi Pass, so if you've booked Multi Pass, you can save it for a return time later in the day.

Option 3: The Last Hour Before Close
The last hour of the day is the best free backup if you missed the morning. Lines can ease as families leave, but it isn't guaranteed, and on busy days the wait can stay long until close. Animal Kingdom often closes earlier than Magic Kingdom, so check the park hours for your date before you plan around this.
Disney's usual rule is that guests already in line at the posted closing time are allowed to ride. Check with a Cast Member if you're cutting it fine.
If the park is open after sunset on your date, the walk through Pandora is a treat on its own, because the land's plants and landscape light up with a glowing, bioluminescent effect.

Option 4: Lightning Lane Single Pass
Flight of Passage is the only Animal Kingdom attraction sold as a Lightning Lane Single Pass. You pay per person for one ride, on top of your park ticket, and the price changes by date, so check it in the My Disney Experience app.
- When to buy: Disney Resort hotel guests can buy up to 7 days before check-in, and other guests up to 3 days before their park day, from 7:00 AM Eastern.
- Does it sell out? It can, especially on busy dates, so buy it as soon as your window opens if Flight of Passage is a must and you can't do Early Entry or rope drop.
- What you get: a one-hour return window, not instant boarding.
- Multi Pass is separate. Multi Pass covers rides such as Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Na'vi River Journey, but not Flight of Passage.
Does Rain Affect Flight of Passage?
The ride itself is indoors, so it isn't an outdoor coaster that has to stop for every storm. That makes it a sensible ride to save for a wet afternoon if you've already done the outdoor rides. Don't expect a short line just because it's raining, though. Lots of guests have the same idea, and any ride can pause for technical reasons.
If storms are forecast, our guide to which Universal Orlando rides close in the rain explains how Florida weather affects outdoor rides in general.
Height Requirement, Rider Switch and the Test Seat
- Height: riders must be at least 44 inches (112 cm) tall.
- Rider Switch: Flight of Passage is on Disney's Rider Switch list. One adult waits with the non-rider while the rest of the group rides, then they swap without queueing twice. Na'vi River Journey has no height requirement, so it's a good choice for younger kids while others ride.
- Test seat: there's a sample ride seat near the entrance, so you can check the fit before committing to a long queue.
- Health warnings: read the warnings on Disney's attraction page before riding, especially if you get motion sickness.
A Simple Plan for Flight of Passage
- Decide how much it matters. If it's a must-do, plan for Early Entry or rope drop, or buy Lightning Lane Single Pass the moment your window opens.
- Check park hours and Early Entry for your date the night before.
- Arrive before the gates open and head straight to Pandora.
- Ride Flight of Passage first, then move on to Na'vi River Journey or the rest of the park.
- Watch the live wait. If you missed the morning, look for a dip later on or try the last hour.
- Use it as a rainy-day ride if afternoon storms roll in.
