Best Time to Ride VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure

Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the big thrill coaster in the Jurassic Park area of Universal's Islands of Adventure. Universal calls it the fastest and tallest launch coaster in Florida, and at the start of the ride you launch to 70 mph in 2.4 seconds through the raptor paddock. It's one of the most popular rides in the park, so the standby line can get long, and when you go matters more than almost anything else.

The best time to ride VelociCoaster without paying extra is first thing in the morning: during Early Park Admission if you're staying at a Universal Orlando hotel, or right at park opening if you're not. The last hour before Islands of Adventure closes is a second chance, though it isn't guaranteed. Universal Express Pass is the paid way to skip the regular standby line, and riding in the morning also gets you on before any afternoon storms roll in.

Why VelociCoaster Has Long Waits

VelociCoaster is a headline coaster, and it shares Islands of Adventure with Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, the park's other big morning target. Both are in demand from the moment the gates open.

It's also an outdoor coaster, which means weather and technical stops both affect it. When the ride pauses and then reopens, the line can build again quickly. Posted waits change through the day with crowds, weather and downtime, so treat any plan here as a guide rather than a promise.

Option 1: Early Park Admission

Early Park Admission is the strongest free option if you can get it. Guests at all Universal Orlando Resort hotels can enter a theme park up to an hour before it opens, by showing their hotel key card and valid theme park admission. Universal decides which park and which attractions are included, and its terms say this can change without notice.

At the time of writing (22 October 2026), Universal's Early Park Admission page lists Islands of Adventure for Early Park Admission from 5 October to 30 November 2026, with Jurassic World VelociCoaster among the available attractions alongside Hagrid's, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff and Ollivanders. The same page lists no upcoming Early Park Admission dates for Universal Studios Florida. Some annual passholders get Early Park Admission too, on all or selected dates depending on the pass.

If you have Early Park Admission, the big choice is VelociCoaster or Hagrid's first. Both are in the early window, and both lines build once the gates open to everyone. Pick the one that matters most to your group, ride it first, then go straight to the other.

Option 2: Rope Drop Without Early Park Admission

If you're not staying on site, aim to be at the Islands of Adventure entrance well before official opening time. VelociCoaster is in the Jurassic Park area rather than by the entrance, so allow time for the walk.

On Early Park Admission days, hotel guests may already be in line when the park opens to everyone, so don't expect the shortest wait of the day. It's still generally a better bet than waiting until later, when the line has had hours to build. If the posted wait is already high, ride something nearby and check again later.

Park hours change by date, and autumn days can be short. On 22 October 2026, for example, Universal listed Islands of Adventure as open from 9 am to 6 pm, with Early Park Admission from 8 am. Check your own date in the Universal Orlando app the night before.

Option 3: The Last Hour Before Close

The final hour before Islands of Adventure closes can be a good second chance, but it isn't guaranteed. Waits can stay high into the evening, and on busy nights the line can stay long right up to closing, and an evening storm can close the ride for the rest of the day. If you're cutting it fine, ask a Team Member at the entrance whether the queue is still open.

Option 4: Universal Express Pass

Universal's VelociCoaster page lists Universal Express Pass for the ride. Express is an extra purchase on top of your park ticket, and you need separate theme park admission. The price changes by date, so check Universal's site or app for your day. Express lines can still have a wait, but you skip the regular standby line.

Is There a Single Rider Line?

Not at the moment, as far as recent reports show. In December 2025, WDW News Today reported that VelociCoaster had closed its single rider queue to make sure every seat is filled, with Team Members splitting groups into odd- and even-numbered parties instead. A Team Member told them single rider "probably" won't return. Universal says single rider lines are offered at select attractions and can change without notice, so check at the entrance on the day.

Does VelociCoaster Close When It Rains?

Often, yes. VelociCoaster is an outdoor coaster, and in our analysis of which Universal Orlando rides close in the rain, it was closed in more than half of the heavy-rain events we tracked. It also goes down quite often in dry weather, so if VelociCoaster is closed on a sunny day, it's probably a technical stop rather than the weather.

In our rain guide, more than half of the rain closures we tracked started between 2 pm and 6 pm. If storms are forecast, ride VelociCoaster in the morning instead of saving it for later.

Height Requirement, Lockers and Child Swap

  • Height: riders must be at least 51 inches (130 cm), according to Universal's attraction page.
  • Lockers: free single-use lockers for small loose items are available at the ride entrance, and larger lockers can be rented for a fee. Allow a few extra minutes for this step.
  • Metal detectors and badge reels: WDW News Today reported in March 2026 that badge reels are no longer allowed on VelociCoaster, because the metal sets off the ride's metal detectors and guests are sent back to the lockers. Put metal items in the locker first.
  • Child swap: if someone in your group can't or doesn't want to ride, Universal's child swap lets one adult wait with them in the family room while the others ride, then swap without queueing again.
  • Test seat: if you're not sure the restraint will fit, Universal suggests trying the test seat at the attraction entrance or speaking to a Team Member.

A Simple Plan for VelociCoaster

  1. Decide how much VelociCoaster matters. If it's a must-do, plan for Early Park Admission or rope drop, or budget for Express Pass.
  2. Check park hours and Early Park Admission for your date the night before.
  3. Choose between VelociCoaster and Hagrid's for your first ride if you have Early Park Admission.
  4. Head straight to Jurassic Park at opening if VelociCoaster is your first target.
  5. Use the lockers before you join the line, and take off badge reels and other metal items.
  6. Watch the live wait during the day. If it drops, go. If not, try again in the last hour.
  7. Ride early if storms are forecast for the afternoon.
